Komoro Castle 小諸城跡

The town of Komoro lies at about twelve kilometers southwest of Mt. Asama and is on the terrace formed by ash of the volcano. The Chikuma River flows from the south towards the town carving steep cliffs by erosion and turns to west below the town. The town has been important as the town along the highway that connects Tokyo and Nagano and other northern regions of Honshu.
It is no wonder that the place was chosen as the site of a castle. The remaining structures of the Komoro Castle, WCA JA-00089, were built in the late 16th century and in the 17th century. This castle has been selected as one of the best one hundred castles in Japan. The castle is a rare “hole castle”: It lies below the highway and the town beside it. This might have made the defense of the eastern side difficult, but once one sees the steep cliffs of the western side, he can understand the reason why this site was chosen easily. 小諸の町は、浅間山の約１２キロ南西にあります。ここにある小諸城は、珍しい「穴城」で、城下町よりも城が低いところにあります。城跡（懐古園）の一番奥まで行って、見晴らし台から南や西を見たら、そちらは急な崖になっていて、千曲川を見下ろしており、北や南にも千曲川に流れ込む流れが、火山灰台地に深い谷を刻んでいるので、城の築かれたところが天然の要害であることが分かりました。

千曲川を見下ろしたときには、しばらく方向の判断がつきませんでした。先入観として、川が東から西へ流れていると思い込んでいたためのようです。実際は、南の佐久のほうから流れて来て、城の真下で西に方向を変えています。
